      • I don’t know how to get started or what to say.
      • We don’t have anything in common. What do I do?
      • We’ve been corresponding for a while now, and I just don’t think we’re a good match.
      • Is it appropriate to ask why they’re in prison?
      • Do you do background checks on your inside penpals?
      • I don’t identify as LGBTTQ. Can I still participate?
      • I identify differently than my penpal. Is this an issue?
      • Are there things I shouldn’t talk about when corresponding with my penpal?
      • A lot of the materials prepared by the Prisoner Correspondence Project seem to communicate a more political or more radical perspective than I feel comfortable with; do I need to agree with the outlook of your organization to become a penpal?

RESOURCES TO SEND INSIDE

** The Prisoner Correspondence Project coordinates a resource library of information requested by our penpals and other queer, gay, transgender and transsexual folks in prison. Materials include information regarding harm reduction practice (safer sex, safer drug-use, clean needle care), HIV and HEPC prevention, homophobia, transphobia, coming out, etc. A full list of resources available for photocopying is included below. Penpals who want access to materials but can’t come by the QPIRG office should just get in touch and we will arrange to get them to you. In addition to all the resources for inside penpals, we have also compiled a number of readings helpful to non-incarcerated people wishing to know more about doing prisoner solidarity for queer and trans prisoners. Please note that our resource library is constantly in the process of being updated and this list will grow in the coming months. It was most recently updated as of early April 2009. Please forward us suggestions of resources you would like to see included or that you have access to and would like to share!
